Recorded at the University of Oregon on January 31, 1989, with an ensemble created especially for this occasion called the Northwest Creative Orchestra, EUGENE (1989) functions rather like a Greatest Hits survey for Anthony Braxton. These eight tracks are mostly new interpretations of pieces Braxton wrote in the mid-to-late-'80s, many originally performed by much smaller groups than the 17-member Northwest creative Orchestra.

Unusually for his concerts with large ensembles, Braxton not only conducts, but also plays alto saxophone. He's rarely the focus of these performances, however, barring a stunning solo on "Composition 112"; Braxton's style for large groups usually involves giving individual members small solo passages in quick succession. The results are like an eddying sea of sound, where one player briefly pops to the surface for a few bars before submerging again into the tumult. These performances are powerful and often fascinating.
